This memorial is for my father-in-law Raymond Joe Vrba, Jr. I never got to meet him. He died two weeks before his son (my husband) was born. We've heard he was a good and decent young man who spoke his mind. I wish we could have gotten to know him. My mother-in-law tells us a lot of stories about how he was and all. So young he was. He was a friend of Barry Sadler. He is mentioned also in Barry Sadler's book "I'm A Lucky One", which contains a photo of him. His name is also in the song. Also my mother-in-law and husband are mentioned in the book. We love you, Dad! Benjamin Widder. Raymond, Wendi, and Alexis. SSG Raymond Joe Vrba Jr is mentioned in Barry Sadler's song 'I'm a Lucky One': 'I'll hear Vrba, Young, and Horn laugh again out loud ...' In Sergeant Sadler's autobiography (also entitled 'I'm a Lucky One'), there is more about Sgt Vrba, including a picture. I never got a chance to thank Sgt Vrba for giving his all that I might live free but in the summer of 1979, I met his cousin Anna Vrba and told her of my gratitude. Clifton McLendon. SSG Raymond Joe Vrba Jr was the son of Mr Raymond Joe Vrba and Mrs Geraldine Marie Uptmor Vrba. He is the Husband of Mrs Linda L Vrba, and Father to Raymond of Stedman, NC.
