First Lieutenant, 327th Bomb Squadron, 92nd Bomb Group. Navigator aboard U.S. Army Air Forces B-17G Flying Fortress #43-38389, nicknamed "U've Ad It." Shot down by enemy fighter on mission to Merseburg, crashing onto an airfield at Brandis, east of Leipzig, Germany. Eight crewmembers were killed and two, the ball turret gunner and tail gunner, survived and were taken as prisoners. Missing Air Crew Report № 8889. Henry C. Vicars, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. L Vicars, 6110 Tremont, will be reburied at 11 a. m. Wednesday in the National Cemetery at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio. Vicars, an Air Force navigator, was killed September 13, 1944 on a mission over Merseburg, Germany. He was serving with the 92d Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. He was 21. He received his education at Woodrow Wilson High School and at North Texas Agricultural College, Arlington. He joined the Air Force in April 1943, after working a short time with the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. Vicars received his wings at Ellington Field, Houston, and went overseas in June 1944. He was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, and the Presidential Citation. Surviving are his parents; a daughter, Miss Nancy Ann Vicars of College Station; and a brother, Bryan Vicars of Dallas.
