EMMA A. PETTEY ROSE Emma A. Rose was born in Nashville, TN 23 March 1904, the daughter of Robert M. And Ethel Tennie Pettey. By 1910 the family had moved to Hillsboro, Texas. After completing her education, she taught at New Home School in Bosque County, and during this time met Carl Winfield Rose, who was teaching at Steiner School. They were married 2 June 1927 at Hillsboro, and in 1928 moved to Swisher County. They taught school at Elkins, Center Plains, Valley View and Tulia. During the summer months, they attended summer school at Canyon, and at the end of the summer term of 1936, both received their degrees. They were the parents of two daughters, Juanelva Marie, born 3 July 1937, and LaVelda Joy, born 22 March 1941. After 19 years of teaching, Mr. Rose retired to devote his time to farming. They moved to Tulia, and Emma retired. When a second grade teacher in the Tulia school retired, Emma was asked to take her place for the remainder of the term. The next year she was assigned to teach first grade, and continued for 24 more years, when she retired. Again, she was asked to complete the term for a teacher who had to quit due to illness in her family. At the end of that term, in 1969, she finally retired for good, after teaching forty-one years. Mrs. Rose had a gift for working with children, and was dearly loved by all who were fortunate to have been her students. Her home was located near the school, and she was kind enough to allow a local piano teacher to give lessons there during school hours, so the children would not have to walk so far. She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Tulia, and sang in the choir for many years, until 1988 when she moved to California to be near her youngest daughter. She died 25 March 1998, at the age of 94, in Valley Community Hospital in Santa Maria, CA. She was brought back home to Tulia and buried beside her husband.
