Bio

James E. Maddox, 78, of East Moline, died September 22, 2008 at his home. Funeral services were at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave. Moline. Burial was in Greenveiw Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Jim was born July 30, 1930 in Hazen, Arkansas to Lee and Annie Holcomb Maddox. He married Lucille "JoAnn" Miles on June 19, 1951 at the Memorial Christian Church, Rock Island. In December of 1949 Jim was hired at John Deere Plow-Planter Works. He entered the U.S. Army and served from February of 1951 and was discharged as a Sgt. First Class on February of 1953. In 1953 he was elected Departmental Steward and alternate chairman. In 1959 he was elected shop chairman, and remained chairman until staff appointment on November 11, 1969. Also in 1959 he was elected to Deere National Negotiation Committee and was at every Deere negotiation until February 2, 1987. In 1964 he served as Vice-President to fulfill a resigned term. In 1969 he was appointed as Region 4 UAW International Representative by Region 4 Director Robert Johnston. On August 31, 1987 he retired after 37 ½ years at Deere with sixteen of those years as an elected officer of UAW Local 434, eighteen years as an International Representative and two years as a Sub Regional Director. Many Quad City Unions have been served by Jim. These unions are Local Unions, 79, 81, 281, 377, 434, 865, 1277, 1414, 1536, 1710, 1758, 1801, 1896, 1919, 1994, and 2137. He was also involved in organizing several new Locals in the Quad City area. He was a member of the UAW John Deere Council, UAW Deere Screening and UAW C.A.P. Council. He served from 1980-1986 on the Board of Directors of the Quad City Health Plan. Jim loved working in his yard and at his Gooseberry Lane cabin. He also loved hosting friends and family in his garage for Thursday "Cavalier" meetings and Sunday "Bears" games.
