Thanks to contributor #47226369 Published in the Ord Quiz, Ord, Nebraska, Thursday, September 25, 2008 “Virginia” Thompson, Ord, NE Resident, 85 Veronica “Virginia” Thompson, 85, of Ord, NE died Wed., Sept. 17, 2008 at the Valley View Living Center in Ord. Mass of Christian Burial was Mon., Sept. 22 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord with Fr. Tom Ryan officiating. Burial was in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Virginia was born Feb. 14, 1923, to Leon S. and Helen E. Augustyn Carkoski in Valley County, NE. Her mother died when she was eight years old. She grew up on the farm riding horses, helping with milk cows and working in the hay fields. She received her early education at Elyria and graduated from Ord High School in 1942. She moved to Grand Island and worked at the ammunition plant. She later moved to Los Angeles, CA, to live with her sister. On May 2, 1943, she married Frank W. Banks at Camp Adair, OR. To this union, three children were born. The couple resided in Texas, California and Guam. In 1949, Mr. Banks died from polio. The family then moved to Ord. On Aug. 28, 1953, she married Robert B. Thompson in Grand Island, NE. The couple had two children. While living in Ord, she worked in child daycare and at the Ord Quiz. In 1970, they moved to Florissant, MO and also resided in Grand Island and Loveland, CO. They returned to Grand Island and in 1987, Mr. Thompson died. She returned to Ord in 2000 where she resided until her death. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. Sr. and Patricia Banks of Omaha; four daughters and son-in laws, Mary and Ray Marshall of Ord, Annie and Rod Dietrich of Lincoln, Nancy and John Grandt of Florissant, MO and Jane and Tom Klanecky of Ord; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Valentina 'Viola” Wright of Los Angeles, CA. She was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents and a grandson, Matthew Dillon Marshall.
