Bio
Dr. Grace Burcham Funeral for Dr. Grace Burcham, 93, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church, Weatherford, with the Rev. Lynn Brack officiating. Dr. Burcham died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, in Lawton. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Weatherford, under direction of Lockstone Funeral Home, Weatherford. She was born Jan. 10, 1915, in Reed, to Sarah Davis Burcham and W. F. Burcham. She grew up in Greer County and graduated from White Flat High School. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a master's and doctorate from Northern Colorado University, Greeley, Colo. She began teaching school in a one-room schoolhouse and taught in rural schools near Hinton, Centralview Consolidated School Greer County, Lone Wolf Public Schools, Central State College and Weatherford Public Schools. She retired from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1980 as chairman of Elementary Education. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she participated in UMW, Sunday school, church activities and projects. She was a 60-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma, belonged to Custer/Dewey County Retired Teachers, O.E.A., N.E.A., P.E.O., sponsored a sorority at SWOSU and participated in many community organizations and projects. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Educators Hall of Fame. Survivors include a sister, Mable Hamburger, Lawton; and many nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Myrtle Dudek, Blanche Cox, Doris Rude and Pearl Burcham; and five brothers: Sid Burcham, Carl Burcham, Davis Burcham, Scott Burcham and Bill Burcham. Memorial contributions may be made to Weatherford First United Methodist Church.
