Services for William Alfred Speights, 83, Van, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 21, at Van First Baptist Church with Reverend James Day officiating. Burial was in Haven of Memories Memorial Park, Canton, under direction of Hilliard Funeral Home, Van. Mr. Speights died November 18, 1999 in a Tyler hospital. He was born May 31, 1916 in Mexia to the late William Henry and Jewell Vester Speights. He grew up and lived in Point Enterprise community, where he worked at farming anad as a blacksmith. He also did maintenance work and mowing during the summer for Standard Oil Company and the highway department. He was drafted into the Army in 1942, was assigned to 177th Engeneering Battalion and was sent to Alaska, where he helped build a hospital, hangars, a runway and terminal at Fort Richardson. He was sent to Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1945. He returned home and went to work for Pure Oil Company in Van (now Union Oil) where he worked as a roustabout pumper and field machinist until 1975, when he was put in charge of Van Salt Water Disposal Company. He retired from Union Oil in 1982, after more than 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by son, Benny Thompson. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Speights, Van; sons, Steve Speights and Stan Speights, both of Garland; brother, Floyd E. Speights, Killeen; four grandchildren; and one nephew.
