Hansford J. McGehee enrolled as a private in the Confederate Army on 27 May 1861 at Corinth, Mississippi. He was a member of Company E of the 16 Regiment of Mississippi for the duration of the war. He was wounded several times, and suffered from rheumatism and furuncle. He suffered a contusion and was captured defending the home of Jefferson Davis on 21 August 1864. He was released on 15 March 1865 as part of a prisoner of war exchange. He was confined to the hospital several times: in Manassas; and in Howard Grove Hospital in Richmond, Virginia; and in the Confederate Soldiers of America Hospital in Farmville, Virginia. Hansford married Martha Gardner McGehee, on 6 Aug 1863. Martha Gardner had first married George McGehee, first cousin to Hansford McGehee. After George's death, Martha married Hansford, who raised the two children Martha had with George: Georgiana and Ida.
