Wife of Alfred Coffin I am only distantly related to Lelia M. Coffin, buried in Indianola Cemetery…but I've been doing a lot of research on her family and wanted to let you know that her maiden name was Marcus, not Mitchell. She was the daughter of the Rev. Moses Marcus and was born in Northampton, England. The church records list her baptismal name as Kezia (after her mother) Jane Lellias Marcus. She moved to Nantucket with her father, who started the Episcopal Church on the island when he came to conduct the wedding of his oldest son, William. While living there, both she and her father married and had children (her mother had evidently died some years previous). Mitchell was her mother-in-law's maiden name, and was common on Nantucket, although not one of the oldest families on the island like the Coffins. According to the 1850 census, she was still using the name Lellias, but as her grave marker indicates, she eventually became known as Lelia. Her oldest brother, William, named one of his daughters Lellias after her, and it seems likely that Lellias was her paternal grandmother's name, although I cannot find information on her father's parents. Moses Marcus was baptized in London at the age of 15, and was a convert from Judaism. Pamela Athearn Filbert My 4x great-grandparents hosted the wedding of William Nathaniel Marcus (Leila's brother) and Lydia Athearn Cary (orphaned niece and namesake of Lydia Cary Athearn) Killed in the Hurricane of 1875, never found
