Photograph of the Churchyard of St. Thomas the Martyr, Upholland from LancashirePast.com. Ann Smith Patterson is the daughter of Robert Banks Smith (1830-1909) and Ruth Atherton Smith (1836-1908). She was born in Upholland, Lancashire, England. Ann's parents and all of her siblings joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and subsequently immigrated to the U.S. state of Utah in the late 1800s. Their eldest daughter, Ann, did not go with her parents and her six younger siblings to the United States. It also appears that Ann did not join the LDS Church with her parents and siblings, because her family weddings and christenings/baptisms were all performed in the Church of England. Ann Smith Patterson remained in Lancashire after her marriage. She and her husband, John Patterson, were parents of four children all born in Upholland. Their children are (1) Margaret Ellen Patterson Critchley, born 20 Dec 1880 in Upholland. (2) Robert William Patterson, born 15 Sep 1881 in Upholland.
