Bio

Note on her name: She was known as "Emma T." in early records, like the 1870 census and her father's will, but started using Teresa in official records as an adult. Teresa was one of six known children born to Elijah Gilbert and Elizabeth Bowers of Monroe Township, Coshocton County, Ohio. Tragedy struck in the fall of 1873 when her 12-year-old brother William and her father died of typhoid fever. The kids appear to have been scattered by the 1880 census, and only Joseph was living with their mother. "Emma" may have been living in Richland, Holmes Co., Ohio with a Lepley family in the 1880 census. If that's her, she was indicated to be a servant. On Aug. 16, 1902, Teresa married Luther Winther of Portland, Oregon. They were married in Salt Lake City, Utah by a minister of the Mormon Church. In the record, she was indicated to resident of Loudonville, Ohio (which was incorrectly written as Londonville). How this union came to be is not known. Teresa and Luther lived in Portland for the rest of their lives. Siblings: John M. Gilbert (1858-1946) William E.
