Vallie Ray Bankston passed away in the early morning hours of December 25, 1952 of injuries he received on November 2, 1952 in a drilling accident. He had been confined to Palomar Memorial Hospital since the accident. He was born on January 3, 1893 in Lexington, Oklahoma, son of James Preston and Mary Matilda (Webb) Bankston. Vallie married Bertie Alma Hightower on May 2, 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma. She passed away in 1937. He later married Dorothy. He came to Escondido seven months prior to his death from San Diego. Vallie was employed by the Bersch Brothers Well Drilling Company. He had worked throughout the Texas, Oklahoma, and California oil fields as a driller before coming to this section. Vallie was a member of a Masonic Lodge in Oklahoma. He was survived by his widow, Dorothy; two sons, James P. Bankston and Vallie R. Bankston; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Taylor; five grandchildren; his father James P. Bankston; and a sister, Pearl Woodrum. Services for Vallie were held on Saturday, December 27, 1952 from the chapel of the Alhiser-Wilson Mortuary. Rev. Clell C. Gray, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiated. Burial took place in Oak Hill Memorial Park. *****
