James John Jiral, a longtime resident of Wilson County, Texas James was born in Wilson County on Oct. 1, 1923, to Vincent and Annie Zissa Jiral. On June 10, 1950, James married Lillie Frances Kubena in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville. He served his country in World War II as a truck driver with the 587th Bomb Squadron with the U.S. Army. His battles and campaigns included Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, the GO 33 WD 45 Air Offensive, and Europe. James earned the EAME Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, and the World War II Victory Medal for his service. He later worked for the railroad for several years. James and Lillie owned and operated a dairy near Poth for many years. During this time, James was president of the board of the Farmers Gin Co. in Poth for 10 years. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the KJT society, Hermann Sons, the Farm Bureau, and VFW Post 8555 in Poth. James earned the coveted outstanding Soil Conservation Farmer in Wilson County award in 1962. His plaque was presented to him on April 13, 1962, at the Floresville Lions Club meeting. James was also honored for his achievements at the Region III awards dinner in Brownsville on May 17, 1962. This distinguished award included a tour by dairymen and businessmen to the James Jiral Dairy Farm between Floresville and Poth. At the time, Wilson County was the second-largest milk-producing county in the San Antonio milkshed; about 75 dairymen were responsible for an annual income of $1 million to this diversified farming section of Southwest Texas. After he retired from the dairy business, James enjoyed making wine from locally grown grapes and sharing his wines with family and friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of Alamo Heights Health and Rehab Center, Harbour Hospice, and his individual caregivers, Vernell and Velma, for their loving care. James was preceded in death by Lillie, his wife of more than 57 years; his parents; and his brother, Edward Jiral.
