Bio

Nels Herman Anderson, 97, passed away at home on September 11, 2025, in Waterloo, NE. He was born of Danish immigrants Hans and Minnie in Carter Lake, IA. When he was four years old, the family moved to rural Waterloo and resumed dairy farming. It was a difficult journey as it was during the drought and Depression. He attended elementary school at District 15 and Valley High School. He enlisted in the US Army and spent most of his service in Japan during the Korean War. Upon returning to the United States, he worked at the Martin Bomb Plant. In Mead, NE. There he met the love of his life, Opal. They married and settled not far from his childhood farm. On their acreage, they raised three children, Jim, David and Christine. He began his career driving a cement truck for Ready Mix Concrete Co . He was a very loyal and wiseman who stayed with them for over four decades. Nels and Opal celebrated sixty-two years of marriage before her passing in 2017. Prior to losing his wife, the loss of their son, David and their son-in-law, David Janke, made for bittersweet years to come. His legacy lives on through two children, three granddaughters, step-grandchildren and "greats" who brought him immense joy. Nels lived a simple life grounded in faith, family and friends. When we visited him on his 97th birthday, he was mowing his little acreage-doing just what he wanted to do! " Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories."- Ronald Reagan Private family services were held. Memorials are suggested to the Elkhorn Cemetery Association.
