Bio

Josephine Anna Martinek, age 85, passed away on July 3, 2023 in Arlington, Texas. Following her work-related accident at the UTA Library, she had been wheelchair bound since 2014. A private service for her immediate family was held on July 6 at Boze-Mitchell McKibbin Funeral Home in Ennis with entombment in the mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Josephine, born in Ennis, Texas on January 28, 1938, was the loving and devoted daughter of Barbara Novy Martinek and Jerry Wesley Martinek. After graduating from Ennis High School in 1956, she received the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry from Texas Woman's University in 1960. She then entered the Graduate School of The University of Texas, where she received her Master of Arts degree in microbiology in 1963. In 1971, she earned her Master of Library Science from The University of Texas at Austin. During her college years, Josephine received numerous honors and awards: Undergraduate: Alpha Lambda Delta Beta Beta Beta Kiwanis Scholastic Achievement Award Graduate: University Fellowship Public Health Service Training Grant In her early work career, Josephine worked as an assistant librarian at The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation in Ardmore Oklahoma as a research associate in microbiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, as a literature scientist at Alcon Laboratories in Fort Worth, and as a research associate in biochemistry at The University of Texas at Dallas. After she earned her Master of Library Science from UT Austin, she began a long career at The University of Texas at Arlington, first as a science librarian-bibliographer and then as head of the science-engineering department university libraries. She continued working at the UTA library until February 2014 when an accident ended her career. Josephine had numerous hobbies and interests which included shopping, dining out, collecting recipes and cooking, going to the movies, watching TV, reading and writing poetry, doing research on her Czech heritage, and spending time on the family farm for weekends, holidays, and family celebrations. Josephine is preceded in death by her parents.
