Bio

Johnnie Joe Balcar, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, at Schulenburg Regency Nursing Center. His final months were marked by various medical challenges that began in February 2025, which he faced with remarkable resilience and determination. The funeral service was conducted at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Saturday, July 12, at 11 a.m., followed by inurnment with full military honors conducted by the Schulenburg American Legion in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Schulenburg. The Rev. Jasper Liggio presided over the service. The family selected distinguished honorary pallbearers including Garrison Balcar of Fort Worth, grandson; Tyler Gibson of Richardson, grandson; Zach Bush of Dallas, grandson-in-law; David Held of Houston, grandson-in-law; Allen Gibson of Houston, son-in-law; Hunter Held of Houston, great-grandson; Ryan Gibson of Houston, grandson; and Stanley Pesek of Schulenburg, brother-in-law. Prior to the funeral service, Kenneth Berger led a rosary recitation at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Born in Schulenburg on April 10, 1933, Johnnie was the firstborn child and only son of John Isidor Balcar and Martha Jennie Mazac. He grew up alongside his two beloved sisters, Margie and Mary Jane, in a close-knit family environment. Due to the prevalence of Johns in the family lineage, he acquired the endearing nickname "Sonny,"which followed him through his childhood and later became associated with his professional identity. Johnnie's commitment to personal growth was evident in his educational pursuits. While serving honorably in the Army, he completed his GED and after his service he earned his Associate Business degree from Blinn College, demonstrating his dedication to lifelong learning and excellence in math and numbers. As a lifelong resident of Schulenburg, Johnnie successfully took over and expanded his father's construction business. His deep faith was reflected in his devoted membership to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church throughout his lifetime. Those wishing to honor Johnnie's memory are encouraged to make donations to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery Fund, or a charitable organization of their choosing, continuing his legacy of community support and generosity. Johnnie was preceded in death by his beloved wife Patrica Zapalac Balcar of 60+ years, who was his constant companion and source of strength; his parents John and Martha Mazac Balcar, and his sister Margie Machala and her husband Rudy, all of whom surely welcomed him home with open arms. Johnnie leaves behind a loving family who will carry forward his legacy: his daughter Sherrie Gibson and her husband Allen of Houston; son John Gary Balcar and his wife Rhonda of Whitney; and son Danny Joe Balcar and his wife Michelle of Schertz. He is also survived by his dear sister Mary Jane Pesek and her husband Stanley of Schulenburg, who shared countless memories with him throughout their lives. His family tree extends to seven grandchildren who brought him immense joy, one great-grandson who represented the newest generation of the Balcar family, and several nieces and nephew who will remember him fondly.
