Lena Ruth Newsom MAY 25, 1929 – MARCH 28, 2019 Our sweet mom and Gramma Ruth, returned to the loving arms of her husband on March 28, 2019 at her granddaughter's home in Utah. She was born on May 25, 1929 in Tahoka, TX, the daughter of Mama Ivy Berry and Marvin Eldridge. She graduated from Portales High School in 1946. On October 29, 1949 she married David Newsom, they had two children, Margaret and John David. Ruth loved learning and continued her education and graduated from UNLV, receiving her teaching degree in 1973. She taught school in O'Donnell, Paducah, Aspermont, and Bledsoe. Ruth was a former member of National Council of Teachers of English, Math and Social Studies. Ruth was dedicated to service and spent many hours with social organizations including the Order of Eastern Star, South Plains Genealogical Society, and Friends of the Library. Ruth loved doing genealogy and learning about her family history. She had a passion for peacocks and in her later years raised peacocks on her farm, so she could enjoy their beautiful colors. Ruth had many diverse interests including various music, Mexican Soap Operas, gardening, watching Basketball, "Junk" Stores and a whole variety of other things. She was an amazing gramma, always making sure her grandchildren were well taken care of and often spoiling her great-grandkids with sugary sweets. She was fortunate enough in the last month of her life to meet her youngest granddaughter Annabella, they connected in an instant watching Disney Movies. Survived by her two children Margaret Elizabeth Newsom Perez and John David Newsom, her granddaughter and their children, also survived by her granddaughter and her children and three great-great grandchildren. Also survived by her brother John Eldridge. Preceded in death by her parents, her husband David and great-great grandson Brody Stevenson. A memorial service will be held on May 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park, 15602 Loop 493, Lubbock, Texas.
