Monsignor Raymond Miles was born on October 22, 1909 in Gandy, Nebraska to parents Henry J. Miles and Florence "Belle" (Morgan) Miles, who had come to Nebraska from their native state of Indiana. He was one of 12 children. He grew up in North Platte, Nebraska and graduated in 1927 from St. Patrick's High School in that city, where he starred on the school basketball team and was the editor of his high school newspaper. After high school, Raymond began training for the priesthood at St. John's Seminary in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was ordained into the priesthood at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island on February 24, 1934. Father Miles served at parishes in Chadron, Stapleton, Arnold and Chappell in the Diocese of Grand Island, before becoming the pastor of St. James Church in Kearney, Nebraska on February 1, 1957. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1970. He was named a Monsignor in 1959 by Pope John XXIII. Msgr. Miles spearheaded the fund drive and was the founder of Kearney Catholic High School, which opened in 1961. He died April 8, 1983 in Arizona and in his will he donated his body to science.
