In 1900, "Horace" (Harris) Curry, age 10, born in Texas in October 1889, lived with his parents Thomas and Mary Curry, and brothers Edward and Ezra in Howe, Grayson County, Texas. Harris entered the U.S. Army on 10 December 1917. As a private in the 20th Engineers, Company D, he sailed aboard the troopship SS "Tuscania" on 24 January 1918. On 5 February 1918, the "Tuscania" was torpedoed and sunk in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland by German submarine UB-77 with the loss of 215 American soldiers. Harris returned from World War I aboard the "Santa Paula" in May 1919. He had listed his brother Ezra R. Curry as his next-of-kin while on "Tuscania" and his sister-in-law Mrs. Effie Curry (Ezra's wife) on his return voyage. Harris's military serial number was 250,289. On 5 October 1936, Harris married Alma Glazener Grandy Sawyer in Los Angeles County, California. She had been married to Quinnie Tillman Grandy (1886-1918) with whom she had a son, John Earle Grandy (1908-1981). In 1940, Harris Curry, age 50, born Texas, a mess attendant at the Veterans Hospital, lived with Alma in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California.
