Gilbert Bohuslav March 9, 1933 - May 17, 2025 U.S. Veteran Gilbert Bohuslav, age 92, of Lake Jackson, passed away on May 17, 2025. He was born to Willie Sr. and Agnes Parma Bohuslav, in Ammannsville, Texas. The youngest of three children, he graduated from Schulenburg High School in 1951. He received a baseball scholarship and played ball at Blinn College in Brenham. He enlisted in the Army in November 1952, and when he returned home, he graduated with his bachelor's degree from Texas State University in San Marcos. He later earned his master's degree from Texas State University as well, in 1963. Gilbert was blessed with a large, loving family. He married Veronica Matocha on September 11, 1955, just five days after he got out of the Army, and they moved to San Marcos for him to complete his college degree. Twelve months later, they welcomed their first son and shortly afterwards, they moved to Freeport, Texas for Gilbert to begin his teaching career. They had two more sons and three daughters in Freeport, before moving to Lake Jackson, Texas in 1969. Gilbert loved being a teacher and followed in the footsteps of both his mother and father. He began teaching math at Freeport Junior High and also taught math and data processing at Brazosport High School. In the summers, Gilbert would work at Dow Chemical Company, as well as take classes for his master's degree. He later went to work for Brazosport College where he was instrumental in the formation of the Computer Science Department and was the department head for over 20 years. Gilbert loved his family and spent countless hours coaching them, helping them with homework, and driving them to sporting events. He never missed a school function his children participated in, and he always encouraged them to try their best in everything they did. He was also active in his church as a Eucharistic Minister, an usher, a member of the Knights of Columbus and the first president of the local chapter of the KJT (Czech Catholic Men). He and Veronica enjoyed playing bunco and 42 dominoes with their longtime friends and liked playing bingo weekly at Carriage Inn. Once retired, Gilbert also enjoyed his weekly coffee and discussion time with his "Wild Bunch" group of men, and he enjoyed the "College Oldies" group he helped organize and meet with monthly. One of his callings in life for over 15 years was organizing and working at the Knights of Columbus-sponsored blood drive. He was recognized as an Outstanding Blood Drive Chairman for the entire Houston area. Gilbert is survived by his wife of 69 years, Veronica; his children, Dwayne Bohuslav (Joanne) of San Antonio, Texas; Yvonne Thornton (John) of Wichita Falls, Texas; Pam Gardner Taylor (Gene) of Phoenix, Arizona; Roger Bohuslav (Marcela) of Buda, Texas; Michele Lancelot (David) of Weston, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the best Popo to ten grandchildren: Josh Thornton (Jesse), Lindsay Thornton Casey (Lance), Alex Gardner Porter (Jack), Ray Bohuslav, Cooper Gardner, Grey Gardner, Grace Lancelot, Kate Lancelot, Jack Lancelot and Michael Bohuslav. He was also blessed to have eight great-grandchildren who loved his big bear hugs and enjoyed him getting on the floor to play with them even in recent years! Gilbert was preceded in death by his son, Michael Gerard Bohuslav, who died when he was nine years old. He was also preceded by his parents; sister, Dolores Klesel; and brother, Willie Bohuslav, Jr. Visitation will be on Friday, May 23, 2025, from 4:30-7:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Lake Jackson, with the Holy Rosary service beginning at 6:30 p.m. The funeral will be on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Lake Jackson. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Hostyn. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 936 FM 2436, La Grange, TX 78945.
