Bio
Sonja (Reis) Martinez, 85, a former resident of Virginia Beach, VA for 36 years, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, on March 23, 2014, at Meadowood Retirement Community of Worcester, where she had resided for the last three years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benito "Lucky" Martinez, in 2009. They were married over 60 years. Born December 25, 1928 in Nuremberg, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Wilhelm and Berta (nee Hartman) Reis. She was also preceded in death by a baby brother, Willi, who died at age 4 during a diphtheria outbreak. Shortly after school as a young woman, she trained to be a telephone operator and served in that capacity to the American allies at the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg. In the U.S., she worked as a telephone operator for a doctors? service in Jenkintown.At Meadowood, Mrs. Martinez enjoyed the company of good friends she met there, as well as crafting, Bocce Ball, and time spent outdoors with the Hiking Club. She also tended a small garden outside of her building in Cardinal Crest. Surviving are two daughters, Ursula Fortmeier and her husband, Allen, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Margarete Emery and her husband, John, of Trooper; a brother, Walter Reis, of Hatboro, and a granddaughter, Meaghan Rose Emery. We will miss her very much at our family gatherings. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service at 11AM on Monday, March 31, at the R. L. Williams, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 3440 Skippack Pike @ Cedars Rd., Skippack, where family will receive friends from 9:30-10:45AM. Interment will be private at Whitemarsh Memorial Park.
