Bio

Obituary (From the Brown's Memorial Funeral Home website): John "Gary" Morris a long-time Irving resident passed away on April 22, 2025, in Irving. Gary was born in Houston, Texas on January 16, 1942, to parents John N. Morris and Johnnie (Davenport) Morris. Gary moved to Irving in 1947 and lived there the rest of his life except for a brief stay in Denton. He was a graduate of Irving High School and after graduation earned a baseball scholarship. In 1966 he joined the United States Marine Corp and attended Officer Candidate School where he became a 2nd Lieutenant. He served his country in the Viet Nam War and later spent 26 years in the Marines retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. After his service Gary and his father owned and operated Morris Specialties in Irving. Like his father, he was quite active in both community endeavors and education programs. Gary was most proud of his work with the three Irving high school Junior ROTC programs. In his personal life, he enjoyed his artwork for some forty-seven years. Collectors of his art work ranged from Troy Aikman and Hall of fame pitcher Goose Gossage, two Texas governors and two Commandants of the United States Marine Corp. If one wished to get Gary to talk, all one had to mention was the Marines, baseball, or his grandkids. Gary's basic philosophy was that God put each of us on this earth to help each other. He is preceded in death by his parents and leaves behind to cherish his memory daughter Kara Holloway and husband Jonathan and their children Madeleine Holloway and Olivia Holloway, daughter Lori Ann Ross and her daughter Riley Ross and Riley's father Richard Ross. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until Noon on Monday, May 5, 2025, at Brown's Memorial Funeral Home, 707 N. MacArthur Boulevard in Irving. Funeral services will be held at Noon after the visitation... Burial with Military Honors will be held at 1:15 PM on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 At Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to First Methodist Church of Irving or DFW Humane Society.
