Bio

John Charles Cerny, 75, of Fremont, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, at Nye Legacy, surrounded by family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, John will be remembered for his kindness, steady presence, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Born on June 26, 1949, in Albion, Nebraska, to Stanley and Marie (Kalisek) Cerny, John grew up in a close-knit family. He attended school in Albion and later in Spalding before moving to Fremont in 1963. He graduated from Archbishop Bergan High School in 1967 and later earned his Nebraska Master Electrician's License, a testament to his strong work ethic and skill. In 1968, John began what would become a nearly five-decade career at Valmont Industries, working as a maintenance electrician until his well-earned retirement in 2017. He took great pride in his work, but his true passion was always his family. On July 6, 1968, John married the love of his life, Julie Milburn, in Fremont. They raised six daughters who were the absolute pride and joy of his life. His family grew even more with the arrival of his cherished grandchildren, each of whom he adored. John was a man of strong faith and deep community ties. He was a devoted member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, an active participant in the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Elkhorn Valley Rifle Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 200. He found joy in giving back, serving as a Nebraska Hunter Safety Instructor, an American Red Cross blood donor, and a past school board member for Archbishop Bergan High School. He loved attending car shows, traveling, fishing, hunting, going to concerts, and attending NFL and MLB games. He also had a deep passion for politics and was a strong supporter of MAGA. John will be deeply missed by his wife of 56 years, Julie, and their daughters: Lisa (Jason) Enninga of Alexandria, MN; Jennifer (Clifford III) Bartlett of Pound Ridge, NY; Becky (Terry Hovorka) Cerny of Malvern, IA; Joni Wright of Council Bluffs, IA; and Jessica (Jesse) Downing of Brooklyn, NY. His legacy lives on through his ten beloved grandchildren: Sidney and Joshua Enninga; Clifford IV, Tori, Grace, Abigail, and Maya Bartlett; Edward Wright; and Charlotte and John Downing. He is also survived by his son-in-law, David Larsen of Omaha. He leaves behind his sister, Trish (Randy) Johnson of Oakland; brothers, Bernard (Kay) Cerny of Avoca, IA; Steve (Cathy) Cerny of Fremont; and Dan (Carol) Cerny of Bennington, along with sisters-in-law, Elaine Cerny of Goodyear, AZ, and Janet Cerny of Lincoln, and brother-in-law, Warren Matson of Schuyler. He is now reunited in peace with his parents, Stanley Cerny and Marie Brazda; his stepfather, Otto Brazda; his daughter, Debra Larsen; his sisters, Jane Francis Cerny and Rose Marie Matson; and his brothers, Stanley Jr., Michael, and Thomas Cerny. John's life was one of quiet strength, deep love, and unwavering devotion to those he held dear. His legacy of hard work, kindness, and integrity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 4, at Moser Memorial Chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a rosary service at 7:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
