Vance was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Wayne and Gertie Lynch and his first wife, Charlotte Copenhaver Lynch. He is survived by his loving family, wife, Sarah Lynch, daughter and son-in-law, Leah & Lee McFadden, son and daughter-in-law, Luke and Debbie Lynch, sister and brother-in-law, Ina and Brent Green, brother, Lynden Lynch, brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Sherry Lynch, three grandchildren, Vance Cameron Lynch, Jenna Lynch and Charlotte McFadden, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Vance cherished his family and loved the times that they were all together. He spent his early years on the farm where he was introduced to one of his great passions, hunting. When Vance was in high school, the family moved to Highlands, Texas. In 1945, he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown. Shortly thereafter he entered the Army, where he served in Korea. After returning to Texas, Vance enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Geology in August of 1951. Vance loved The University and rarely missed a Longhorn football game even when he lived in California. After graduation, he went to work for Tidelands Exploration Company. It was on an assignment for Tidelands in Orange, Texas, that he met and fell in love with Charlotte Copenhaver. They were married on December 5, 1952. They settled in Houston, where both of their children were born. A year after losing Charlotte to breast cancer, Vance was fortunate to meet and fall in love once again. Four years later, he married Sarah Townsley on February 15, 1982. Vance and Sarah lived in Southern California, Houston, Dripping Springs and for the last 14 years on the 10 acres that Vance loved near Liberty Hill. Vance had an illustrious career as a geophysicist. He earned his Master of Science degree from the University of Houston in 1959. A few years later, in 1964, Vance accepted a job with Union Oil Company of California and the family moved to Los Angeles. Vance loved working in the oil business. He traveled the globe looking for oil and had many great adventures. He was Chief Geophysicist of the International Division for 13 years. In his professional endeavors, Vance made trips to numerous countries in six of the seven continents. Vance held other positions for Unocal culminating in his position as Vice President of Scientific Computing. He was a proud member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists until his death. Throughout his career, Vance published and presented papers for both organizations. He enjoyed attending the annual conventions where he spent time with his many friends and colleagues. Vance retired from Unocal in 1990. Vance was a life long member of the Church of Christ. He served as an elder in Arcadia, California, Oak Hill, Texas and at the Georgetown Church of Christ. Vance was a voracious reader and researcher. He taught numerous Sunday School classes and loved to discuss his favorite subjects, particularly science and religion. Vance had a strong love of God which determined how he lived his life. He was faithfully dedicated to the church and was much loved by his fellow members. Vance was an avid hunter. His passion for hunting took him on two trips to Africa, as well as trips to British Columbia, Alaska, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and numerous trips in Texas. Vance was a remarkable man and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His generous heart, keen and inquisitive mind, wonderful sense of humor and booming laugh will live on always in their memories.
