Bio

Betty Cooper Mathews of Montgomery died March 19, 2025 after a brief illness, surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Stella Handly Cooper and William Roland Cooper; her sister, Judy Shattuck (Dick); and her brother, William Roland Cooper, Jr. (DeLaine). She is survived by her husband, George H. B. Mathews; her son, Judkins C. (Jud) Mathews and his wife Kimberly; her son G. H. Burgin Mathews (Burgin) and his wife Glory; and her grandchildren, Elliott Mathews, Henry Mathews, and Norah Murphy. Betty grew up in Camden, Alabama, and graduated the University of Alabama in 1967. Afterwards she worked as a public relations representative at Alabama Gas Corporation in Birmingham. In Birmingham she met George, an attorney, and moved with him to Montgomery after they married. Betty was a giving person. An active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, she served three terms on the Vestry, taught Sunday school classes, and served as Christian Education Director for six years. A lover of music and a talented pianist and singer, Betty sang in the choir and directed children's musical pageants at St. John's. In recent years she volunteered with the Respite dementia ministry, where she often led participants in song. Betty loved all children and reached out to them in many ways over the years.. She served two terms on the Montgomery Partners in Education board and worked with the leaders of a Montgomery public school to develop enrichment programming for the students. For this work she was awarded the Volunteer of the Year for Montgomery and Prattville area by the Junior League of Montgomery. She was an active board member for Holy Cross Episcopal School and pioneered a fundraising program that involved all local Episcopal churches. Betty also spent six years as headmaster's assistant at Montgomery Academy, where she found energy and joy working with school leadership, faculty, students, and families. She was a member of the Montgomery Antiquarian Society, the Montgomery Junior League, Colonial Dames, Montgomery Garden Club, Tintagil Club, a book club, and a luncheon group. To many of those who loved her, she was "Boots": cherished wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She loved time with her family -- at home, on trips, and at "Homestead," the family's lake house. The memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 24, with the Rev. Duncan Johnston officiating. The family will receive friends in the Parish House one hour before the service.
