Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Blair, who was born March 6, 1801, and died April 2, 1871, in Umatilla Springs, Flordia. Sarah's mother was Elizabeth Stockton, who was born in 1808 and died July 13, 1887, in Cobb County, Georgia. Sarah married Martin McElwreath on November 7, 1844 in Georgia. They became parents of five children. The family came to Trickham, TX in 1874. Grandma Sarah was a midwife, having begun the study of midwifery in Georgia and practiced it in Trickham. She eked out money for books on the subject, studying them in every spare moment. Most households had a new baby soon as the last one was out of the cradle, and Grandma's modest charges and her nearness helped her to develop a large practice. She received $1 a week for nursing and care, and $5 for delivery of the baby. If money was not at hand, she would accept firewood, corn, quilt tops, or pigs, or any other commodity. Her natural ability and her high character made her one of the most prominent, and certainly the most needed, in the area. Grandma loved to read. She had gone to school only one day in her life, she told the children, but somehow she had learned to love the printed word. At night, she would sit by the fire reading her Bible or "doctor book" or, if there was money enough, the Dallas News. She used a very small brass lamp which needed only a trace of oil and made a very tiny light. She would move this little lamp along before the line she was reading, her keen face alive with interest.
