OBIT: Mae Johanna Derrick Smith, 90, of Ellensburg, passed away on Friday, April 11, 1997 at Royal Vista Care Center in Ellensburg. She was born Aug 29, 1906 at a farmhouse in the Kittitas Valley (one of five children) to Jens and Anina (Schormann) Christensen. She attended the old Denmark and No. 6 schools, as well as Kittitas High School. She grew up in a very extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as other Danish families who immigrate to the Denmark District in the late 1880s. She married Fred M. Derrick in 1926, a farmer and horse breeder who died in 1967. She married Ernest Smith in 1974, who preceded her in death in 1984. Mae's great hobby was automobiles and driving. She said she drove her father's new car home from Ellensburg at the age of thirteen and ever after loved cars and driving. She was a member of the 4-K Club and Homemakers' Club. She was a lifetime member and president of the Homemakers' Club which was founded by her mother and neighbors in 1908. She also sponsored the Fred Derrick Memorial trophy that is presented every year to a 4H member. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria and her husband Robert McDonald of Colville; grandchildren, Marlyn Fast of Kennewick, Diane Boehmer of Woodinville and Robert Federick McDonald of Mercer Island; great grandchildren, Thomas Scott McDonald, Derrick Boehmer, Ryan, Jeremy, Heather, and Amber Johanna Fast; a brother, Carl Christensen and Rowena of Quincy; sister Helen Abbott; brother-in-law, Paul Duma of Ellensburg. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Duma and Anna Hodgson. Memorial cryptside services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, at IOOF Mausoleum in Ellensburg, Washington.
