Wilfred "Gene" Jurecka, long-time resident of Sealy, passed away peacefully at Memorial Herman Hospital in Katy on February 17, 2025 at the age of 83. He was born July 29, 1941 in Fayetteville, Texas to Olga (Martinek) Jurecka of Ellinger and Ladislav "Lad" Jurecka of Fayetteville. Gene is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Jean (Svrcek) Jurecka; his children, Kirk Jurecka and wife, Susan, Sandra Newman and husband, Todd, and Chad Jurecka and wife, Shannon; and his brothers, Lee Jurecka and wife, Anne, and Raymond Jurecka. He has 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. His family has strong roots in Fayetteville where Gene attended St. John's High School where he met the love of his life, Mary Jean Svrcek. They enjoyed going to school events but most of their time was spent working on their family farms. In 1961, they were married at St. John's Catholic Church in Fayetteville. They moved to Houston where they lived for a few years while starting their careers before finally settling in Sealy in 1970. Gene began his career of over 60 years as a barber working in Houston where he enjoyed talking with customers and building lasting friendships. He also gave much of his time to the Knights of Columbus where he was a lifelong member. In his younger years, Gene played the accordion in a local Polka band. You could often find him coaching Little League baseball for his boys' teams and he also coached his daughter's softball team. Throughout his life, he enjoyed listening to Polka music, going fishing, hitting a round of golf, and playing cards with his friends. He and Mary enjoyed being part of a local bowling league and also enjoyed taking the kids on annual vacations. He is preceded in death by his parents, Olga and Lad Jurecka, and brother, Kenneth Jurecka. A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Frydek, followed by a rosary at 11:00 a.m., and then the funeral mass at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at 1:45 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Sealy.
