Bio

Rita Jane Henderson, of Murdo, SD, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at the Maryhouse in Pierre, SD. She was born on August 7, 1929, at her parents' home in Butte, NE, the youngest of nine children of the late Bernard and Clara ( Sibbel ) Tunink. Rita attended St. Peter & Paul Catholic School in Butte. She stayed at home to help her Dad and siblings on the farm while two brothers were serving in the military. Rita and Harley Henderson were married on May 5, 1955, and they spent more than 50 years in South Dakota. Working at Dean's Market was one of her favorite jobs, as was running Mack's Cafe, where she had no problem telling teenagers when they were not behaving appropriately. She was a hard-working, honest woman of great faith, who never hesitated to speak her mind. She will long be remembered for her red lipstick. Rita and Harley enjoyed playing cards and spending time with their family. Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Harley, and is survived by her children, Harley (Pam) Henderson, Wayne, NE, Bruce (Tina) Henderson, Omaha, Harlana (Dale) Duis, Fairbury, NE, Lorrie (Wayne) Esmay, Murdo, and Kim (Mark) Weingartner, Port Saint Lucie, FL; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Andrew, Edward, Cyril, Alfons, Albert Tunink, Alvina Lechtenberg, Stella Burger, Agatha Hynes, and an infant brother. A visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. CDT on Monday, July 31, 2017 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Murdo.
