Alice Horner's notes: Refer to her death announcement, under the name Velma A. Baker, in the Rockford Register Star's October 2, 2000 edition, through GenealogyBank.com. The following information is based on my research, with the sources cited. Her parents were Willard Henry Peck and Elsie Mae Peck (her father's name was William Peck). Both Elsie and Willard have Findagrave listings. Willard H. Peck's obituary in the March 23, 1976 edition of the Freeport Journal Standard (through Newspapers.com) gives her name as Mrs. Conroy Baker of Mount Morris, Illinois, and lists her siblings. Her first husband was Staff Sgt. John F. Ryand (1921-1944), who was killed on February 25, 1944 when his plane was shot down over Austria during World War II. His obituary in the May 25, 1950 edition of the Daily Register of Red Bank, New Jersey, through Newspapers.com reflects the fact that his body was only recovered and shipped back to the United States in 1950. The obituary names her Mrs. Velma Randall of Freeport, Illinois, and states that she was his wife. Several online trees show her husband as Melvin Arthur Randall (1925-1999). They were married January 5, 1947, and they are listed in the 1948 Freeport City Directory. The marriage date comes from the June 14, 1948 edition of the Freeport Journal Standard, announcing her request for a divorce from Melvin Randall; the June 19, 1948 edition of the Freeport Journal Standard announces that the divorce was granted. The source for both newspapers is Newspapers.com. Velma Peck's subsequent husband was Conroy Samuel Baker (1922-2003), who she married on June 7, 1952 in Mount Morris Township, Ogle County, Illinois (source in an online tree). His obituary, from the January 22, 2003 edition of the Freeport Journal Standard, through GenealogyBank.com, states that he was survived Velma, who died in October 2000, and it names 3 children, whose father's can be found from the sources above.
