Bio

Amy Olene (Ashton) Thomas was born on January 30, 1932, in Eustace, Texas, to Lawrence J. Ashton and Minnie Fayrene (Whisenant) Ashton. Mrs. Thomas passed away on January 5, 2025, in Athens. She was raised in Dallas by her grandparents, Pete and Mallard Whisenant, and left school at the age of 13 to work at Thrift Packing Company. By the age of 15, she began working at Sears and Roebuck, where she remained for 12 years. Later, she spent many years in the grocery business alongside her husband, Kermitt. In 1961, they moved their family and raised them on the farm near Malakoff. Olene, known as "Big O" to her friends, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Malakoff. Olene enjoyed traveling, gardening, and sewing. She was an excellent cook, well-known for making the best strawberry cake. Her grandchildren affectionately called her "Granny," and she deeply loved her family. Olene's absence will be deeply felt by many, and those who knew and loved her will cherish her memory for years to come. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Willie Kermitt Hayes and her second husband Billie Wayne Thomas; her son Ken Hayes and her brother Leon Ashton. Survivors include her special friend of over 30 years, Harvey McAnally of Athens; her children, Bubba Hayes, Karl Hayes, and Pam Kuykendall and her husband Virgil; her brother Steve Ballard and his wife Geneva; her grandchildren, Jenni, Kristi, Katie, Josh, Kimberly, Shelby, Garrett, John, Kasey, Justin, Kandace, Derek and Todd; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
