He was born in Bell County where he lived his entire life. After graduating from Temple High School in 1957, he joined the United States Air Force from which he was honorably discharged. Upon returning to Temple he went back to work at a cabinet shop where he had worked through school from age 13. Mr. Coufal worked for the Temple Police Department for 8 years, and was named Officer of the Year in 1968. While with the police department, he attended night school at Temple Junior College for three years. Afterward, he worked three years as a claims adjuster, followed by two years in general contracting. Finally, 21 years in three factories led to being plant manager at each of the three. He retired in 1993, but later decided to drive a school bus as a retirement job for eight years. He said that working with 6 and 7 year olds was his favorite job of all the varied jobs he had held. David Married Jean Craig in 1960. They raised three children, who in turn gave them five grandchildren. His joy was travelling back roads of all 50 states with Jean, visiting flower gardens along the way. However, great joy was also found living through the childhoods of his grandchildren. David had a keen interest in early Christian writings and the makeup of the Holy Bible, and spent hours studying that at the computer and in the pages of the Bible itself. He was born into the Brethren Church. Though at times he had served as a deacon, elder and treasurer, he loved and preferred to work behind the scenes. David Coufal was preceded in death by his daughter, Denise Coufal Cox Yauger, and is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean; another daughter Joyce Frei, wife of Don Frei of Westphalia; a son David Coufal Jr, of Austin, and grandchildren James Frei (Jessica), Richard Frei (Laura), Travis Cox (Jennifer), Douglas Frei (Jenny), and Bonnie Yauger Harris (Chris). He is also survived by great grandchildren: Daniel, Lydia and Sam Frei; Michael, Joe and Anna Frei; Abigail and Katie Frei; and Daphne and Kira Harris. A memorial service followed by a fellowship meal will be held at Ocker Brethren Church in Zabcikville at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2025. I lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Ocker Brethren Church. Temple Daily Telegram. Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
