Richard was born in Colon, NE on December 20, 1934 to Anton F. and Mary T. (Vybiral) Vasina. Richard lived a wonderful childhood in Colon. He spoke of climbing trees, riding his bike, playing ball and playing cops and robbers with his beloved friends and his older brother Howard. He graduated from Wahoo Public High School in 1952. He served in the Army during the Korean War stationed at Fort Lewis. He attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln with a degree in banking in 1959. He started at the State Bank of Colon as a Teller, just as his father did previously right after college. He spent 54 proud years serving the community where he became Chairman, President and CEO of the bank. He was honored to work with his older brother Tony, his older sister Dorothy and his "right hand" Linda Akerson for many of those years. Richard also served his community as a volunteer fire fighter for several years in Colon and was also part of District 117 school board for years there also. He met the love of his life Delores "Tootie" Staack while in college in Lincoln on a double date and made her his wife on May 16, 1959 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Manley, NE. In 1965 they were blessed to become parents to a son Rick Alan and then a daughter Debra Ann in 1969. In between learning what they needed to learn in life, they were both also taught the importance of Nebraska Football. Richard did not miss a home game for the Cornhuskers from 1958 – 2022. He made it to several if not most of the away games for the Huskers. His love for football could be challenged by his love of playing softball. Several years of playing softball continued into his seventies and after, when he would still discuss starting his team up again someday. He also bowled and played card games with many of his beloved friends. He was a proud lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Colon, assisting with many of the church dinners and Knights of Columbus functions. Richard was also a proud member of the American Legion, Post 265. His father Anton and several others started the post in Colon; his mother Mary started the Auxiliary and the Junior Auxiliary in Colon. Following his parents lead he and others also started the Sons of the American Legion in Colon. Richard held all positions at one time at Post 265. At the State Department he was on the Finance Committee and was appointed to the State Finance Office for many years. He attended as a delegate for Nebraska at the National Convention. He was part of the Nebraska delegation to Washington DC to speak to our representatives for veteran issues. He also was on the Foreign Relations Council. Richard also served our veterans in the 40 & 8 organization. He served as Nationale Commissaire Intendant, Central States President, Chef de Train, Chef de Gare and Correspondent for the state of Nebraska, and National Secretaire of Box Car, a position that is currently held by his son-in-law. He is survived by his son Rick Vasina of Colon; daughter and son-in-law Debra and Virgil Blum; granddaughter Christina Blum of Queens Creek, AZ; sister-in-law Dorothea Vasina; many nieces, nephews, relatives and beloved friends that all meant so much to him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Vasina; parents; brother and sister-in-law Anthony and Doris Vasina; sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Frank Warfield; brother Howard Vasina and nephew Kevin Vasina.
