Rev. Msgr. Daniel L. Scheel, born September 27, 1944, in Wharton, Texas to George A. and Julia Ruether Scheel, died peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2024, in Houston, Texas. A visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m., with a Vigil for the Deceased at 6:00 p.m., followed by a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at St. Jermone Catholic Church, 8825 Kempwood Drive in Houston, Texas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, also at St. Jerome. A reception will immediately follow the Mass in the Parish Activity Center. The Funeral Mass will also be livestreamed. The Rite of Committal will follow at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston, Texas. He has been the catalyst in building the parish into what it is today, both physically and spiritually. Under his leadership, St. Jerome has blossomed into a larger, ever more loving, multi-cultural parish. Dan Scheel was ordained in Rome at St. Peter's Basilica in 1969 as a young priest, he did not realize he would celebrate the past 25 years as pastor of the vibrant St. Jerome Catholic Church in Spring Branch. In 2019 he celebrated his 50-year Golden Jubilee being recognized in a Mass celebrated by Daniel Cardinal DiNardo on Oct. 13 at All Saints Catholic Church. Serving as chancellor for the diocese for 15 years, Monsignor Scheel worked under Bishop John Morkovsky for the first five years and subsequently with Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza. When asked what his greatest accomplishments have been over the past 50 years, he points to his parishioners and their own ministries. Archdiocese Galveston Houston: Monsignor Daniel Scheel HOUSTON — Monsignor Daniel Scheel died on Sunday, Dec. 1. He was 80 years old. Ordained a priest on Dec. 19, 1969, Monsignor Scheel served as parochial vicar of Holy Family Parish in Wharton, parochial vicar of Holy Rosary Parish in Rosenberg, on the staff of the Office of the Tribunal, parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish in Galveston, vice-officialis of the Office of the Tribunal, parochial vicar of St. Augustine Parish, chancellor of the Archdiocese and pastor of St. Jerome Parish in Houston. He also served as the vicar forane of the Northwest Deanery and as the episcopal vicar of the Western Vicariate. Monsignor Scheel retired on Aug. 4, 2021. A funeral Mass was held on Dec. 11 at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Houston. Interment is in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. †
