Bio

Juanita Ardell Gariss was the youngest daughter and last child born to Ulysess Grant and May E. Meyers Gariss, Ulysess' first wife. Juanita had 3 older sisters, Vernona Josephine, Dorothy Ruth, and Yvonne Mae. She also had 2 half-brothers, Robert Joseph -and John Lawrence. This information was taken from the 1920, 1930 and 1940 U.S. Federal Census'. Juanita's mother, May E. Meyer's Gariss passed away before the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, so Juanita's mother is recorded as Ulysess' 2nd wife, Amelia. The Nebraska Daily News-Press, Tues. Ed., 15 Feb 1944, P. 6, states that Juanita married an Arnold Murphy in 1941. One son, James Paul, was born of this union according to the Nebraska U.S. Birth Ledgers, 1904-1911, Nebraska Birth Index, 1912-1994. The Nebraska Daily-News Press, Tuesday Editions on 8 Aug 1944, P3 C3 and Tuesday Edition 24 Oct 1944, reported on a contentious divorce between Juanita and Arnold, who eventually divorced in 1944. The Nebraska Daily News-Press, Tues. Ed., 20 Feb 1945, P. 6 c 8, reported that Juanita had married PFC Leonard Creek in 1945, and an annulment was granted to PFC Creek ten days after the marriage. The Wyoming, U.S., State and County Marriage Records, 1869-1972 shows that Juanita married John Backman, an Army veteran, in 1962 in Wyoming. My research has not found a divorce decree for Juanita and John, however, Juanita did remarry, so my research continues. The Nebraska, Marriage Records, 1855-1908, show that a Navy veteran, Paul Byron Anderson, and Juanita married in 1963. The Colorado Divorce Index, 1851-1985 show that Paul and Juanita divorced in 1972. Virginia, U.S. Marriage Records, 1936-2014 show that Juanita married George Willie Miller, 1st Lt US Army Air Forces in 1986. Juanita became a stepmother to George's two daughters and two sons. They remained together until his death in 2011. The headstone photo, which was originally taken by another contributor, Shock, has only Juanita's name engraved. The U.S. Obituary Collection records her death as 15 May 2020 in Fairfax, Virginia. I am still searching for an obituary for Juanita. If any of this information is incorrect or you have information you are comfortable sharing, please do not hesitate to contact me. Always here.
