Bio
Reta J. Mathiews was born August 17, 1943 in Athens, Texas, to the late William and Greeta Brown Maynard. Reta graduated from Hamlin High School and then married Charles Mathiews, had two children, Tony and Terrie, and then moved to Athens, Texas, where she had her last two children, Angela and Matt. She was a 20-year employee for Curtis Mathes then retired and went to nursing school. She graduated from Trinity Valley Community College in 1989 with her Applied Science degree in nursing. She worked at East Texas Medical Center as an aide, then as a registered charge nurse at night in the ICU department for about 20 years. And eventually retired from ETMC Athens Home Care. Reta loved her career as a registered nurse more than anything. She was a wonderful co-worker, teacher of new nurses, and most of all an advocate for her patients. She always made sure they received the best care and whatever they needed. She will be truly missed, and her nursing legacy lives on through her daughter, Angela Menchaca. Reta J. Mathiews loved Jesus Christ, loved her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was everything to her. She was relentless in helping her children succeed. She spent a lot of time reading her bible and watching church programs at home. Reta attended Crescent Heights Baptist Church, Cayuga Drive Baptist Church, and the last church she devoted her time with was West Athens Baptist Church. When she wasn't working or helping her kids she loved to read or was working in her yard planting flowers, antiquing, going to garage sales, taking vacations with one of her best friends Sue Hubbard or watching her soap operas, movies and eating out. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Greeta Brown Maynard, son; Anthony "Tony" Mathiews, twin sisters; Billie Shipman and Betty Maynard, brother-in-law, T.V. Early and the father of her children; Charles Wylie Mathiews. Survivors include her children; Terrie Leston and husband John, Angela Menchaca, Matt Mathiews and wife Lorri; grandchildren, Lezli Leston, Lisha Leston Harrison and husband Richard, Meagan Rodriquez, Cassie Lamb and husband Robbi, Madilynn Mathiews, Andrew Rodriguez, and Gabriela Rodriguez; great-grandchildren, Addison Thompson, Ezra and Austin Damacio, Bentley Smith-Marusak, Roxie Smith-Marusak, Clementine Harrison; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
