Easter Belle Frentress Washington was born on April 19, 1924, in Athens, Henderson County, Texas, the daughter of Labon Tillery "Bud" Frentress and Jessie Mamie Susie Gartman. Born on the Saturday before Easter, she was given the name Easter Belle, pronounced the same as the holiday. The 1930 United States Census records Easter Belle, age five, living with her parents and siblings in Athens, Henderson County, Texas, where her father worked as a farmer. The 1940 United States Census records Easter Belle, age fifteen, still residing with her parents and siblings in Athens. At that time, her father continued working as a farmer, and Easter Belle was a sophomore in high school. Athens High School yearbook photographs show that Easter Belle was active in the Choral Club (choir). By 1944, Easter Belle and Clyde Thomas Washington were married and living in Slaton, Texas, according to her father's obituary . The 1950 United States Census records Easter Belle living in Slaton, Lubbock County, Texas, with her husband, Clyde Washington, and their children Shirley, Joyce, Peggy, and Thomas. At that time, Clyde was employed as a railroad serviceman. Easter Belle's husband died in 1963 at the age of forty-nine. His obituary states that the family had been living in Hurst, Texas, for the previous five years, where Clyde was employed by Harvey News Agency. Following his death, Easter Belle returned to her hometown of Athens, Texas, where she lived among her family for the remainder of her life. Easter Belle was preceded in death by her husband; all seven of her siblings; and her daughter Easther Annette (Washington) Powell. She was the grandmother of 44 grandchildren, 105 great-grandchildren, and 35 great-great-grandchildren, many of whom affectionately knew her as "Granny Easter Belle." She is also remembered by many other relatives and friends.
