She was born January 28, 1924 on the family farm in Herreid, SD to August and Christina (Linderman) Klingman. Esther grew up in the Isabelle area. She went to a country school outside of town. Her dad passed away while she was in high school, so she was not able to finish as she had to get a job to help support the family. She became a farmhand during WWII. While working there, she met her future husband, John Lipp. After the war, the two got married. They were married on February 7, 1948. John got a job at Homestake Mine in Lead, while Esther worked cleaning many hotels through the Black Hills. Esther and John had 8 children, D, Mary Louise, K, J, J, T, T, and J. She became a homemaker when they had children. Scouting was very important to Esther. She became involved when she had children. She was the first woman to ever be presented with the Silver Beaver Award. Kids were Esther's world. She watched her kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and any "strays" that came along with them. Her main passion was her family, but she was also very devoted to church. Esther was a member of St. Therese the Little Flower for over 70 years. She became Catholic in the 1950s, after knowing how important it was for John to keep his religion and bring his kids up in the same faith. She was very involved in many areas of the church, including the altar society, choir, and making her famous rolls for events and funerals. Grateful for having shared in her life are her children, D. (T) Lipp, K. (K) Lipp, J. (R) Golden, J. (L) Lipp, T. (M) Lipp, T. Lipp, and J. (R) Lipp; sister, B; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lipp; daughter, Mary Louise Lipp; parents, August and Christina Klingman; grandchildren, Kristopher, Lelena, and Darren; great-grandson, Devin; and her siblings.
