Berniece Marion (Hahn) Hansen, the oldest of three daughters born to Phil and Irene (Uttecht) Hahn, was born September 12th, 1940 and was baptized at Brunswick, Ne. In 1946 they moved to Pierce, NE where she made her First Communion, was confirmed, and attended St. Joseph parochial school through the eighth grade. Berniece graduated from Pierce High School on May 27th, 1959. During her high school tenure, she was active in the Future Homemakers of America, Queens' attendant for the Future Farmers of America, active in the Glee Club and a great supporter of the Athletic activities of Pierce High School. Upon graduation she worked at the Lady of Lourdes hospital from 1959-1960 as a nurse assistant and then was put in charge of the nursery until 1963. On June 2nd of 1962 she married James L. "Country Jim" Hansen of Norfolk at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierce and to this union two children were born, Pamela Kay in 1963 (now deceased) and Lynn James in 1965. At this point Berniece became a "stay at home mother", working part time while tendering our home and guiding our children through High School Graduation. The family moved to Lincoln, Ne where Jim got his degree and she was active in the Dames (Putting Husband Thru School), and then to Grand Island, Ne. In 1970, Jim worked for Chief Industries, and Berniece worked at the Dodge Elementary School as a teachers aid and worked with the school lunch program. She also taught CCD classes at Blessed Sacrament Parish as well as a Brownie Scout leader till the family moved to Pleasant Hill, Louisiana. In 1973, after moving to Pleasant Hill, LA., she was employed at the Pleasant Hill School lunch program and was the manager for two years till the family moved to Columbus, NE. In 1977, She managed the Lakeview High School lunch program till 1981. The family's final move to Crofton in 1981, found Berniece as a Customer Service Representative at the Crofton State Bank till its failure in 1983. Valley State Bank (Now First National Bank of South Dakota) became her last stop as a Customer Service Representative before her retirement on her birthday in 2003. Berniece was a member of the Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Crofton and a member of the Ladies Guild and Christian Mothers, and a long-time participant of the church prayer line. She was a Cashier and clerked for 35 years for the church bazaar. She is currently a member of Immaculate Conception Church (Morning Side Ave), Sioux City, Iowa. She loved her family dearly and always put them first and herself later. She took care of her parents during their time of ill health and special care during the time of her daughters' terminal illness. The three grand-children just added to the enjoyment of life for her, always having plenty of Cookies/Brownies, and Finger-Jello on hand when they came visiting. Always time for a tea party with her only granddaughter, Bella. A meticulous organizer, clean house, and never-ending quest of having the house decorated for the different seasons, she always remembered those that needed a card, got one on time. Those left behind to cherish Berniece's memory son Lynn Hansen and his wife, Mary of Sioux City, IA, and their three children, Spencer James, Ian Louis, and Isabella Rose, brother Kenneth Hahn and wife Sally, two sisters Pat Christensen, and Diane Frederick of Norfolk, Ne., sister-in-law Janet Carl of Manhattan, KS, brother-in-law Larry Hansen and wife Barbara of Norfolk, Ne, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband that she missed dearly Jim "Country Jim" Hansen on April 15, 2024 (they would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary June, 2024), parents Phil and Irene Hahn, a brother Leroy, a daughter Pamela Kay, father and mother-in-law Edwin and Mildred Hansen, brother and sister-in-law George and Joyce Vessells, and Marvin Carl.
