Bio

Stanley Duane Gitt was born on May 27, 1947 in Holdrege, Nebraska, to his parents, George Crawford Gitt and Bertha Lois (Hanson) Gitt. Stan was raised on the family farm near Wilcox, Nebraska with his brothers David, Kenneth, and Daniel. Stan attended Wilcox Public School, graduating with the Class of 1965, where he played basketball, football, baseball, and ran track earning the nickname "Stan the Man". After graduating from high school, Stan attended Midland College and graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He taught at Elkhorn High School where he started the computer and golf programs. Stan was the head golf coach along with being an assistant coach for basketball and football. He also refereed many high school basketball games. On August 3, 1974, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Jane Zeis. They were blessed with four children: Angela Kristen, Alison Joy, Michael James, and Adam John. In 1975, Stan and Kathy moved to the family farm in Valley, Nebraska. Stan retired from teaching and began farming. Stan then furthered his education earning an Associate Computer Degree at Metro College followed by earning double Master Degrees in Business Administration and Computer Science at Creighton University. While going to Creighton, he worked at Union Pacific in the computer program department. After 23 years, he retired in 2013. Stan was a dedicated Nebraska Cornhusker fan making sure to record all the Husker games. He enjoyed playing golf, beginning on the family farm with his brothers and for the rest of his life. He ran and biked, completing a marathon and once rode his bike 100 miles in one day. Trips to the beach along with all the trips to see his children and grandchildren were special. Stan showed his grandchildren all the fun the farm had to offer with tractor rides, hot dog roasts, basketball, ping pong, and pool games. Stan's other hobbies were reading, gardening, raising sweet corn, sharing the produce, yardwork, and cutting down dead trees for firewood that he delivered to others. Stan was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Over the years, he served on the church council and sang in the choir. Regular Husker conversations took place after the Sunday service followed by Dairy Queen treats with his children on the way home. Stan passed away on July 24, 2024, at Nye Legacy in Fremont, Nebraska, from complications of melanoma cancer at the age of 77. Stan was preceded in death by his parents and brother Daniel Gitt. Stan is survived by his wife, Kathy of Valley; daughters Angela Govig of Arvada, Colorado, Alison Gitt of York, South Carolina, sons Michael Gitt of Omaha and Adam (Rika) Gitt of Tokyo, Japan. He is survived by grandchildren: Braxton and Hadley Govig; Isabella and Harper Glymph; Gina (Calvin) Stickman, Brendan Gitt (fiancée Faith Desrochers), Aiden, Emerson, and Ava Gitt; Sophia, Kate, and Grace Gitt. He is also survived by brothers David (Judy) Gitt of Fremont and Kenneth (Susan) Gitt of Mt. Airy, North Carolina, sisters-in-law Ellen Gitt of Kearney and Diane (Greg) Stamp of Hamilton, Ohio along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Stan was to be a great-grandfather in September. A private celebration of life will be held at a future date. (reichmuthfuneralhomes.com/obituaries)
