Bio

Funeral services for James Gard Duncan of Wapanucka will be held December 11 at 2 p.m. in the Wapanucka High School Auditorium. He was born June 10, 1909 in Fairview and died December 1 in Marietta. Mr. Duncan married Edythe Murl Shellenberger Aug. 17, 1929. He was treasurer of the City of Wapanucka for 14 years. He was the Democratic County Chairman for Johnston County for 12 years from 1942 to 1954 and a Johnston County delegate to every Democratic State Convention from 1938 to 1954. Mr. Duncan worked on behalf of the Oklahoma Library Commission on many occasions and made a number of trips to the Capitol to testify on behalf of the State Library to oppose curtailment of the State Library services to rural people. He worked for 43 years for three different Bell Companies including Western Electric, Southwestern Bell and American Telephone and Telegraph. He was Chief Testboardman at Wapanucka Repeater Station, District Toll Chief of the Wapanucka Toll District and later was named Supervisor of Education and Training for Oklahoma and Texas. He returned to Wapanucka in 1961 and retired from the Telephone Company there. In Masonry, he was a Past Master of the Wapanucka Masonic Lodge, Deputy District Grand Master of Southeastern Oklahoma, Grand Pursuivant of the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma and later Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge. In the Scottish Rite of Masonry, he became a 32 degree Mason, was awarded the honor of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor by the Supreme Council of Scottish Rite in Washington, D.C. In the York Rite of Masonry, he was awarded the rank of Knight of the York Cross of Honor, Illustrious Master of a Council and was a member of a Chapter of Royal Arch Masons. He recently was awarded his 50-year pin in both the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Masons. Survivors include his wife, Edith, of the home; one son, John Gard Duncan of Palm Springs, Calif.; one daughter, Nancy Duncan Fox of Madison, N.J. and three grandchildren, Otto Fox of Dallas, Tex., Duncan Fox of Waco, Tex. and Melanie Fox of Austin, Tex.
