Bio

Sherrill Barta, 86 of rural Burwell, Nebraska passed away peacefully at her home the morning of Sunday, July 10, 2024, with her best friend and of her life, Dale by her side. Sherrill Dorine was born December 13, 1937, at the Burwell Hospital to John F. and Louise V. (Goochey) Brockman of Almeria, Nebraska. Sherrill's early childhood years were spent in rural Almeria with her parents and older sister, Arlyn. When Sherrill was a little girl, she attended country school at Almeria. In 1949, John, Louise, Arlyn and Sherrill, moved to Burwell, Sherrill had fond childhood memories. One of those memories was of her riding in the wagon when her dad was picking corn by hand with a team of horses. Sherrill attended Burwell Jr. – Sr. High School. She was involved in band, pep club and 4-H where she learned to sew. She graduated in 1957. Sherrill met Dale at a dance in Almeria. They loved to go dancing and to movies when they dated. They were married in a small ceremony at the First Congregational Church in Burwell on May 18, 1958. Sherrill and Dale were blessed with five daughters. Letitia, Linda, Tammy, Janette and Angela. Over the years, Sherrill was a hard worker and passed that work ethic on to her daughters. Sherrill worked at IGA, Jack & Jill grocery stores, the Curler Factory that was in Burwell, Delbert Wagner Manufacturing then back to Jack & Jill grocery store (now the Burwell Economy Market). She continued working until January 2023. Along with working outside of the home, Sherrill still found time to help and work along side her husband, Dale, for over 66 years. The house she called home was built by Sherrill and Dale tearing down old barns for the lumber and with the help of her dad, John and father-in-law, Ludvick. A few things that Sherrill loved was music and sewing quilts. But what she loved most of all, was her family. Especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Every Sunday morning, she would have the radio tuned into The Big Joe Polka Show. Sherrill and Dale would enjoy watching the polka show on TV, along with old westerns and Nebraska Volleyball. She made quilts for each one of her 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was in the process of working on the quilt for the expectant great- grandbaby that is due in August. She also had a wonderful sense of humor. While at home, Sherrill loved watching the guineas roam the yard and the various birds that would come to the birdfeeder. Another favorite pastime of Sherrill's, was taking photographs of the beautiful scenery and wildlife that came through their yard. Sherrill is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dale; daughters and spouses, Letitia and Ken Gompert of Hastings, Linda and Carl Molesworth of Burwell, Tammy and Randy Obermier of York, Janette and Clayton Gurney of Burwell, and Angela and Rockie Hughes of Sargent; twelve grandchildren, Matt (Katie) Gompert, Annie (Tan) Chaowalit, Chrissy (Nick) Cattau, Rod (Kristen) Molesworth, Brad Molesworth, Robert Molesworth, Tyler (Risa) Molesworth, Nichole (Michael) Runge, Alex (Taylor) Obermier, Cole Gurney, Ashley (Lawrence) Ferris, Cody (McKenna) Gurney; twenty-two great-grandchildren and one on the way. Sherrill was preceded in death by her parents; John and Louise Brockman; a sister, Arlyn; parents-in-law, Ludvick and Leona Barta; and brothers and sisters-in-laws and nephews and nieces. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Burwell. Pastor Alan Petersen will officiate. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at Still Waters Funeral Parlor.
