Memorial graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, at the Ord Cemetery in Ord. Rev. Sherry Sklenar will officiate. Jay M. Sherry Sklenar will officiate. There will be no visitation. O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his son Jay K. (Sue) Hackett of Greeley, Colo.; and his daughters Sharon F. (Bernard G.) Fehringer of Sidney, Carol J. (Richard D.) Kealy of Waterloo, Ill., and Sandra J. (Wallace) Hindalong of Floral City, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, one sister and an infant grandchild. Jay Monroe Hackett was born on Sept. 10, 1911, at Archer to Oscar E. and Edna (Cronk) Hackett. His early years were spent in Pocatello, Idaho, and Ord, where he graduated from high school. Jay was a heavy equipment operator and a diesel mechanic working for the Valley County Road Department, Peter Keiwitt Construction, Nebraska Irrigation & Engineering Co. of Kearney, and the UNK Motor Vehicle Department. He was an avid hunter and gun collector and a member of the First United Methodist Church. On July 4, 1935, he married Gladys Mildred Patrick in Ord. The couple moved to Kearney in 1947 and lived there until 1972, when they retired to Johnson Lake at Lexington. They returned to Kearney in 1999 and Gladys passed away in 2001. Memorials are suggested to the St. John's Center or the Merryman Center for the Performing Arts in Kearney.
