Anchorage Daily News September 14, 1990 Seward pioneer Hazel M. Erwin, 90, a retired teacher, died Sept. 10 at the Anchorage Pioneers Home. A funeral was held Sept. 13 at Holy Family Cathedral. Pallbearers were Leroy Baker, James Delany, Jaime Hidalgo, Dale Lindsey, Don Schroer and Mick Kraly. Mrs. Erwin was born Feb. 8, 1900, in Malloy, Iowa. She attended high school in Mount Ayr, Iowa. She graduated from Iowa State College in Iowa City and Colorado State Teachers College in Fort Morgan, Colo. After teaching in Brush, Colo., she attended summer school at the University of California. She came to Alaska in 1923 to teach in Petersburg. In 1924, she was hired to teach in Seward. In 1925, she married William C. Erwin. She resided in Seward until 1957, when her husband retired from Standard Oil. They moved to Richmond Beach, Wash., and she returned to Alaska after her husband's death in 1965. Mrs. Erwin was active in Seward community affairs. She was a lifelong member of the Seward Library Board, Eastern Star, Seward Women's Club, Pioneers of Alaska and the Episcopal Church. During World War II, she served as secretary for the Office of Price Administration and the Seward Selective Service Board as well as working as a substitute teacher. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star and a delegate for the National Assemblies in the 1930s. She was president of the Seward Women's Club. In 1956, she was state president of the Alaska Federation of Women's Club where she presided over the campaign to obtain authorization and appropriations from the Territorial Legislature for the establishment and construction of Alaska Psychiatric Institute. She also served as a lay member of the State Advisory Board of the Episcopal Church for Bishop William Gordon. During her residence at the Anchorage Pioneer Home, she became a member of Holy Family Cathedral Parish. Mrs. Erwin is survived by her son, Jack of Seattle; her son and daughter- in-law, William and Sheila, of Anchorage; her son, former Justice Robert Erwin of Anchorage; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to either the Seward Library Fund, Seward 99664, or to the Anchorage Women's Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 100273, Anchorage 99510. Funeral arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
