Bio

"Mattie" was the daughter of Obediah and Mary Robinson of Clarke County, Miss. Mattie was married first in 1890 to William George McMinn,a Confederate veteran from near Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi. He served in Capt. Gamblin's Co., 2nd Miss Cavalry. William had 3 daughters from a previous marriage. Mattie's father Obediah and her husband William died 2 days apart in April 1900. They may both be in the cemetery with Mattie's mother Mary and her brother M.Q. Robinson and her sister-in-law Elizabeth. About 6 months after their deaths she married James Madison Deas, a Confederate veteran who was living in Choctaw County, AL, having been born and raised in Clarke County, AL. He served in Co. D, 32nd Ala Inf. They had one child, Dumah Cecil Deas. They lived in Choctaw County, Alabama, near where James' grandfather George Deas had lived some 60 years earlier. James had 6 children from his first marriage to Laura Shamburger, granddaughter of his Aunt Nancy Dees-Shamburger. James died in 1925, and in 1926 Mattie went to live in the Jeff Davis Soldier's Home (Beauvior), on the beautiful Gulf Coast in Biloxi, Miss., where she died and was buried in the cemetery on site. Her marker incorrectly shows her last name as "DEAL" and her death date as June 7,Memorial #27051508. Mrs Mattie Deal a copy of her death certificate which says she died on the first, not the 7th. And her name was Deas, not Deal. She is shown correctly in the 1930 census of Harrison County, residing in Beauvoir.
