Melvin Joseph Michalski, 72, of East Wenatchee and a former longtime resident of Olympia, passed away Friday, July 5, 2002, in Central Washington Hospital. He was born July 19, 1929 to Joseph and Laura (Gizinski) Michalski at Elyria, NE. He attended grade school at Elyria rural school. Following his schooling, he began farming with his parents. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1954 at which time he moved to Grand Island, NE. It was then that he went to work as a janitor for the Grand Island public schools. In 1978, Mel moved to Olympia where he worked at the North Thurston High School as a janitor for 22 years until his retirement. He recently moved to East Wenatchee to be near his sister. Mr. Michalski enjoyed watching his nephews and niece bowl. He also enjoyed going to the Mariners games and playing the accordion. He was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include one brother, Harry of Ord, NE; two sisters, Florence Proskocil of Mtn. Home, ID and Jessie and her husband Emil Adamek of East Wenatchee; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2002 at Holy Apostles Catholic Church with Father Maurie Peterson celebrating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. Viewing will be held Wednesday from 12 noon to 8 p.m. at the funeral home with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Washington Hospital Hospice. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
