Bio
Gary died Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Avera Creighton Hospital in Creighton, Nebraska. Gary "Flea" Effle was born to Vernon and Wilma (Kotrous) Effle on August 21, 1949, in Norfolk, Nebraska. Gary grew up on a farm west of Verdigre where he attended the Sukup School from grades K-8. Then he attended Verdigre High School where he graduated in 1967. He was an active member of FFA. Gary was drafted into the Army in September 1969 where he served 14 months in Korea. Gary returned home in April of 1971. He married Donna Frank on August 14, 1971. To this union two daughters were born, Karla and Kaitlin. Gary and Donna's first home was a farm west of Verdigre, where he milked cows and the family lived there from 1971 to 1976. They moved to town in 1976, where he worked at Maly's Corner Store until 1996. Gary then worked many jobs including farm work, Misty's for both Ryan Vesely and Ryan Zerbe, the Verdigre Livestock Market, Niobrara Valley Golf Course, before he retired from the Village of Verdigre where he did mowing, maintenance, and garbology. When not at work, Gary was also involved in community activities such as Improvement Club, announcing Legion Baseball, and serving as Commander and member of the Verdigre American Legion Post 259 for several years. He also served as a volunteer fireman for many years. Gary loved to be a part of the football chain gang, squirrel hunt, coyote hunt, deer hunt, and fish, but also enjoyed grilling and gardening with family and friends. He enjoyed playing cards at family gatherings, loved driving around town, and listening to Polka music. Gary enjoyed Sunday drives with the family, spending time with grandchildren, and being at their activities. He especially loved time spent cheering on Husker baseball with his children and grandchildren. Gary is survived by his wife of 52 years;his 3 daughters and their husbands; his sister; his 2 brothers; his 5 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Wilma; his father and mother-in-law, William and Irene (Haskin) Frank; brother, Dennis Effle; brother-in-law, Bill Frank; and sister-in-law, Patricia Cihlar. Memorial services for Gerald "Gary" Effle, age 74, of Verdigre, Nebraska will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at United Methodist Church in Verdigre. Delores Ruzicka will officiate, with burial at a later date. The family asks that attendees wear Husker apparel in celebration of Gary's love for the Huskers. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 259 and Army National Guard Honor Guard.
