Excerpt from Ellen Elizabeth (Butler) Gifford obit (also buried in Belle Plaine Cemetery): "At the age of 17 years, March 2, 1850 she was united in marriage to Thos. Fowler, who died some three years later in the gold fields of California. To this union was born, March 25, 1852, one daughter, Sadie Fowler Simpson, who now resides at Udall, Kansas. " **************** Obituary - Simpson Miss Sadie Fowler was born at Centerville, Michigan, March 25, 1851. Here she grew to womanhood and on July 4, 1873 she arrived with her parents and located five miles south of Belle Plaine, Kansas, where she resided until her marriage to Mr. Francis Simpson, also of Michigan. To this union two children were born, Forest B. Simpson, of 707 South G. Street, Wellington, and Mrs. Learcus Fulton, of Denver, Colorado, both of whom were in attendance at the funeral services of their mother. After her marriage Mother Simpson and husband moved to Harper county where they pre-empted a quarter of land and built a comfortable home. After some years they sold this home and returned to Michigan where they remained two years, then returned to Kansas and purchased the Matt Holliday homestead in Harmon township, four miles south of Belle Plaine. Some years later the farm was sold, the family removing to Wichita. Later on, the Wichita home was exchanged for a Walnut valley bottom farm 4 miles northeast of Udall, Kansas. Here on July 8, 1913, the husband and father died. Mother Simpson, with the assistance of her brother Charles (Gifford), and later with that of her son Forest continued to operate the farm until the past year, when they rented the same and Mother Simpson was making her home with her sister, Mrs. Geneva Hargrove, of Wichita, where she died Nov. 2nd, 1923, aged 72 years, 7 months and 7 days. She was a fond and indulgent grandchildren two sisters Mrs. Oveda friend and obliging neighbor. Naturally optimistic, of a sunny disposition, very energetic, thoughtful and considerate for the welfare of others she faltered not to sacrifice her own pleasures and interests for the good of those who needed her assistance. In sickness she was an angel of mercy, untiring in her efforts to give relief as many old friends and neighbors can testify. Her presence will be greatly missed and especially her kind words and smiling visage among us. Besides her children she leaves two grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Oveda Frost of Washington state, and Mrs. Geneva Hartgrove, of Wichita, and three brothers, John, Frank and Charles Gifford, of Belle Plaine; also a host of admiring friends, to revere her memory. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ chapel in this city, Monday, Nov. 5, at 2:30, conducted by elder D. T. Broadus, of Wichita, assisted by W. W. Otey, of this city. A large number of her old friends and neighbors gathered to pay their last respects to one whose memory they fondly cherish. The floral offerings were beautiful. Burial took place in the Belle Plaine cemetery. (Belle Plaine News - Thursday, November 15, 1923) Contributor: #50266709
