Robert "Bob" McVicker passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Denver Hospice Center in Denver, Colorado. He was born on July 24, 1937, in Ottawa, KS, to Robert and Glendora McVicker, one of four children. Later the family moved to Smith Center, KS, where he met his future wife and graduated from Smith Center High School in 1955. Bob then attended Ft. Hays State College in Hays, KS. On December 22, 1956, Bob was united in marriage to Crystle Hooper of Smith Center, KS. While attending Ft. Hays, he ran on the cross country and track teams setting multiple records. After graduating from Ft. Hays with a degree in secondary education, Bob taught high school woodworking, coached track, and was the assistant basketball and football coach at Beloit High School in Beloit, KS. He furthered his education earning a master's degree in administration from Ft. Hays State College. From there he began his career as a junior high principal at Hill City, KS, for three years before moving his family to Abilene, KS. He served as principal of Abilene Junior High School in 1972 and then the new Middle School. During his 13 years in Abilene, he served as the first president of the Secondary School Principal's Association. Then Bob took a hiatus from education and moved to Tennessee for two years where he worked for his friend, R. D. Hubbard from Smith Center, KS, at AFG Industries. He then returned to education as the principal for the new Washburn Rural Middle School in Topeka, KS, for five years. After that, Bob and Crystle moved to Phillipsburg, KS, where he served as the middle school principal for three years before retiring. They moved to Aurora, CO, in 1993 where they remained. For a short time Bob worked as a PARA for special education in the Aurora schools because he loved and missed working with students and said he wasn't ready to give that up yet. Bob and Crystle's family includes five children, Tracey (Ellen) McVicker, Tanya (Carl) Sims, Troy McVicker, Tyler (Tracy Ann) McVicker, and Teri McVicker. The family has enjoyed many family camping trips over the years to Grand Lake, Estes Park, and Beuna Vista, CO, increasing in size over the years as Bob and Crystle welcomed 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Judy (Larry) McGee of Paola, KS, and Mary Alice Snyder of San Antonio, TX, and great grandchild Louis "Louie" Monahan of St. Louis, MO. He is survived by his wife, Crystle of 67 years, his brother Ben (Tammy) McVicker, children, grand children, great grand children, and several nieces and nephews. Bob McVicker was an amazing man, husband, dad, athlete, educator, coach, principal, mentor and friend to countless students, teachers, athletes, and colleagues. His children are so proud of the kind and respectful way he always treated everyone. He never met a stranger, and his smile would light up any room. He will be missed tremendously by those who love him. Bob's wishes were that there would be no services nor memorials. The family will gather together for a private celebration of his life in the upcoming months. The Smith County Pioneer (Smith Center, Kansas) Thursday, March 28, 2024, Page 2
