Bio

Graveside services celebrating the life of John David (J.D.) Harris were held at 5:00 pm, Saturday, May 3rd 2008, under the direction of Branon Funeral Home, in Lamesa, TX. John died peacefully Friday, May 2nd in Big Spring, TX, at the Lusk Texas Veterans Facility. John David Harris, the fifth of 13 children, was born April 13th, 1910 to George W. & Lillie (Brock) Harris, in Villa Rica, GA. The family moved to Texas living in Winnsboro, Anson, Lamesa and Brownfield. As a young man John and his brother Euel worked on the construction of Hoover Dam. John also worked on the Hardy Morgan Ranch. John married Dorris Elizabeth Robinson, daughter of Ira D. and Mae (Crowder) Robinson, January 11th, 1936, in Lamesa. John proudly served his country during WWII, as a Navy seaman on a destroyer ship. After his discharge, the family moved to Denver City, where John owned and operated an auto repair shop. The family moved in 1947 to the Klondike community where John farmed for many years. Later, he returned to being a mechanic. John was an active member of Second Baptist Church for over 40 years. John is survived by his wife of 72 years, Dorris, four children, Shirley Thomas, and husband H.K., of Sun City, TX, David Harris and wife Barbara, Jerry D. Harris and wife Nelda, Larry D. Harris and wife Carol, all of Lamesa, TX., nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, to whom he was lovingly referred to as "Papa John". Also, surviving is one brother, Gerald Harris of Lubbock, TX and one sister Faye Washburn, of Oklahoma City, OK. John was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, three sisters and one great-grandson.
